Spring 2019 Education, Defense & Justice for Youth: Youth Defender Clinical Student

Abbey excelled at everything she did in the Youth Defender Clinic. In an expulsion case, Abbey scoured over one hundred pages of education records and conducted several interviews with the client and his family. She wrote a compelling opening statement for the expulsion hearing tying the underlying offense to both her client’s untreated mental health issues, as well as the impact of implicit racial bias against him. In a district notorious for its high expulsion rate, Abbey managed to convince the three-person administrative panel to unanimously vote not to expel her client.
