Martha Cardenas (Berkeley Law ’20/EBCLC)

Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 Housing Clinical Student

Martha is an absolute legend in EBCLC’s Housing Clinic. During her second semester, in an eviction case involving a notorious landlord, Martha drafted a motion for summary judgment based on a highly technical reading of the law. Her work was as persuasive as it was concise. During our moots (practice arguments), Martha demonstrated deep knowledge of the case. At the hearing, Martha was a fierce litigator. Unphased by an adverse tentative ruling, Martha posited the best case to the judge, responding directly to questions from the bench and addressing any issues raised by the landlord. It was her first oral argument and she had the courtroom convinced that she was a seasoned litigator. Martha also cares deeply for her clients. When tasked with assisting a Spanish-speaking family who faced an imminent eviction, Martha quickly prepared all of the necessary legal documents. Upon discovering that our clients were unable to pay for their stay of execution, Martha quickly pivoted and located financial resources for the clients. If there was some opportunity to keep our clients housed, Martha was going to pursue it. Martha is an absolute star. She is relentless in her drive to best advocate for our community, and we need lawyers like Martha in the field. I know our community is as happy and excited as I am to see Martha graduating from law school and moving one step closer to realizing her dream of becoming an attorney. Here’s to you, Martha. Salud!
