Olivia (Liv) Gee (Berkeley Law ’20/EBCLC)

Spring 2020 Housing Clinical Student

From day one, Liv showed up for this work with a radical commitment to service. While assisting her clients through abusive systems and processes, she always applied an ethic of care (and a healthy skepticism about legal justice) at every point in the legal process. Where the legal process had disempowered someone, Liv made space for their agency. Where a judge or landlord or opposing counsel had wounded someone, Liv made space for them to heal. And while holding the traumas that brought our clients into this system and the traumas attendant to navigating this system, she managed to work within the stifling limitations of the law to keep her clients in their homes and in their dignity. This semester, Liv helped one client (who had lost her case by default) fight her way back from the brink of losing her home–she deftly argued not one but two days of motions against a very aggressive and abusive landlord. In under 24 hours, she prepared for a second day of argument and readied her client to be questioned in court by a judge in front of her very frightening landlord. And she won! Liv is a remarkable advocate who is not afraid to be in this work with her whole heart and her whole self–and there’s few things more brave than that. It has been a humbling and powerful experience to work alongside her this semester.

Summer 2019 Clean Slate Clinical Student

Liv is a remarkable and dedicated advocate who is not afraid to be in this work with her whole heart. In her summer here, she worked on several impact litigation cases inspired by client needs that arose out of our direct services clinics. She did in-depth research on erroneous employment background checks that ultimately resulted in a monetary payment for a client who lost her job due to incorrectly reported information. Liv stood out as someone who was ready to jump into interviews from day one, talking to clients about their background, their needs, and the process of petitioning for clean slate relief.
