Spring 2019 Consumer Justice Clinical Student
Since his first year of law school, Roger has left a huge mark on clinic, working in the Consumer Rights Workshop SLP (student-initiated legal services project) and later leading it into new, uncharted, small claims territory. There wasn’t much Roger couldn’t do fantastically – training students, meeting with clients, researching obscure California Tort Claims tolling issues. Roger knew how unpredictable clinic could be and was willing to put his superior legal skills to use whenever the occasion arose, no matter how strange. At one point he found himself in extended negotiations with the City of San Leandro around the eviction of a boat, which a client was residing in, from the San Leandro Marina. Despite lacking a strong legal position, Roger secured a sizeable debt forgiveness for the client, freed his boat, and got him cash in hand. This was a theme of Roger’s time in clinic, delivering huge victories for clients with sky-high expectations and at times little legal basis.
