Job Announcement: Director of Development and Communications

The East Bay Community Law Center is looking for our new Director of Development and Communications (DDC) who will work collaboratively with the EBCLC Executive Management Team to lead the organization into our fourth decade of providing critically needed legal advocacy to low-income individuals, families, and neighborhoods.

EBCLC is a non-profit legal services organization and the community-based clinical program for Berkeley Law School, committed to increasing justice through education and advocacy and building a culturally diverse workplace, centered on equity. With over 50 staff, 150 law students, and a $6 million annual budget, EBCLC is the largest provider of free legal advocacy in Alameda County, providing multimodal, collaborative, and holistic legal services to over 5,000 clients yearly and engaging in legislative and policy advocacy at the local and state level.

The DDC will facilitate and supervise the work of our five-member Development Team as we tell the stories of the incredible clients we serve each year across five program areas: 1) Housing, 2) Health & Welfare, 3) Immigration, 4) Education, Defense & Justice for Youth (EDJY), and 5) Economic Security & Opportunity (ESO). A central focus of the DDC position will be to help secure the financial support of foundations, corporations, government funders, and individual donors – including the more than 2,000 “EBCLC alums” who have trained in our clinical law internships since we opened our doors in 1988. The ideal person will be a dynamic, entrepreneurial individual who enjoys front-line relationship building and developing long-range plans for strengthening EBCLC’s funding networks. Strong candidates for this position will have a combination of communications and development skills.

The primary responsibility of the DDC position will be to work with the other four members of the Executive Management Team to design and implement a multi-year plan for EBCLC’s fund raising and communications. This will include building on existing fund raising campaign frameworks for government contracts, foundation/corporate funding, and individual donors, as well as creating and launching a new major gifts program. Another key responsibility will be to expand public awareness of EBCLC’s work by guiding Development staff on EBCLC’s relationships with print, electronic, and social media outlets, and coaching EBCLC program staff on consistent communications and relations.

Minimum qualifications for this position are a bachelor’s degree and five years of experience in nonprofit development and/or communications/marketing, or equivalent combination of education and experiences in these areas. Also required is experience supervising and supporting a team of staff members, as well as knowledge of and commitment to the mission and goals of EBCLC.

Experiences and skills that are preferred include: the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; the ability to think strategically, problem-solve, innovate, exercise initiative, and manage multiple tasks/projects and sensitive information; and experience overseeing design and production of marketing materials and publications. A balance of humor, diligence, humility, and mission-driven ambition are definitely a plus!

This is a full-time exempt (salaried) position. The salary range is $95,000 – $115,000, depending on number of years of relevant experience.
