Hewot Shankute graduated from law school in 2011. During law school, Hewot worked in the Criminal Juvenile Justice Clinic, advocating on behalf of poor children and young adults accused of delinquency and crime. After law school, she worked as a corporate attorney at Paul Hastings LLP in Los Angeles, representing companies in a variety of corporate transactions and counseling on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and other corporate matters. During her time in private practice, Hewot provided extensive pro bono representation on nonprofit incorporation and asylum issues and volunteered with Public Counsel’s early childcare and education project.
Prior to joining EBCLC in 2016, Hewot advised on the operation and maintenance of an expanding 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit advocating for reduced vehicle emissions and green jobs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She currently works in EBCLC’s Community Economic Justice clinic where she dedicates her transactional advocacy skills to advance people-oriented economic development in low-income communities and communities of color.
