Consumer Justice

Support clients with pre-to-post litigation civil cases, work with administrative agencies, draft amicus briefs and regulatory comments, organize community workshops, and potentially assist with statewide policy work  

(Closed for Fall 2026; Reopening in Spring 2027)

Skills gained may include:  

  • client and witness interviewing  
  • drafting briefs, pleadings, and motions   
  • public speaking and presentation   
  • drafting amicus briefs and regulatory comments   
  • advising clients on a wide range of consumer law and general clinic issues   
  • navigating local, state, and federal bureaucracies  
  • legal research on a variety of novel topics  
  • learning and applying civil procedure and evidence rules to real cases  
  • negotiations with opposing counsel/opposing party  
  • assisting with statewide policy 

Example Projects/Cases:  

Example 1: Student interviewed a client whose bank had frozen his rental assistance check for nearly four years, which endangered the client’s housing. Student researched all available options, including in and out of court, and got the funds released in just two weeks.  

Example 2: Student met with a senior who was being sued for an unpaid debt. Student assisted the client with all the pleadings needed to defend the client, informed client why she should NOT settle the debt and instead prepare to try the case, and got the lawsuit dismissed after a few weeks without the client paying a penny.
