Housing

 Engage in a full range of litigation procedures while representing tenants in civil eviction proceedings and administrative hearings.  

Skills gained may include:  

  • representing clients in fast-paced eviction defense, and drafting a wide array of legal work product (i.e. answers, dispositive motions, discovery, settlement agreements etc.)  
  • conducting oral argument in court hearings and administrative proceeding under the supervision of attorneys  
  • negotiating with landlords and opposing counsel via email, phone and in person   
  • client interviewing, de-escalation, and case management skills  
  • advising clients about a broad range of landlord-tenant issues, including local rent and eviction protections and subsidized housing,   
  • conducting fact investigations and client intakes   

Example Projects/Cases:  

Example 1: A student successfully drafted and argued a motion in court, reversing an eviction wrongfully entered against a family, and secured them the time they needed to find a new home.  

Example 2: A student worked to support a group of vulnerable tenants – including elderly, immigrants, and non-English speaking folks – displaced by a building fire.  In the immediate aftermath, the student provided advice and counseling at a red cross shelter, and later helped organize tenants to request relocation assistance, advocate to local housing authorities, and search for temporary housing.
