Immigrant Youth Defender

Advocate for youth in immigration legal matters, at the intersection of family, probate, and/or criminal law, with a focus on holistic, client-centered representation. 

Skills gained may include:  

  • developing youth-centered communication skills through consultations and case meetings   
  • navigating legal systems involving immigration, probate, and family law    
  • building advocacy strategies for youth clients in removal proceedings 
  • analyzing practice guides and court rules to ensure complete filings 
  • drafting arguments to support a request for judicial findings 

Example Projects/Cases:  

Example 1: A student worked with social work to interview client and gather evidence to draft California Family Court forms for a Special Immigrant Juvenile Finding.   

Example 2: A student met with a client multiple times, gradually building trust with the client to enable them to describe a difficult past life experience, and developed a declaration to support the client’s immigration application.
