Investing in Democracy Through Voter Education

As we approach a pivotal election, we know that the stakes are high for our EBCLC community. As a women of color-centered, community-based organization, we believe we can uniquely contribute to this political moment. We are actively investing in increasing access to democracy in our community, and we are proud to have taken steps towards this goal through our Community Open House and Voter Registration event. Around 200 community members, including activists, artists, partner organizations, and EBCLC clients, had the opportunity to register to vote, learn about ballot measures, and receive free legal services throughout the day. Learn more about the impactful and energetic celebration below!

In our Ballots and Beyond: Building Power for Affordable Housing in the East Bay panel, we discussed how Proposition 5 can unlock pathways for affordable housing in the East Bay.

Key Takeaways:

We are committed to client-informed advocacy, and empowering our community with political education resources. We surveyed a subset of community members who attended the event, and 76% felt more informed about their vote in the upcoming election thanks to EBCLC’s resources. Respondents also shared which political issues matter most to them this election season, with affordable housing and healthcare being at the top of the list:

“I really enjoyed this event. I received a lot of helpful legal resources. I am grateful for the support and services you provide for myself and others.”

“Gentrification and the policies of the city, county, state and federal government are directed to maximize profits and push out. EBCLC consistently stands with the people struggling so we remain in our beloved community. Thank you!”
