Homelessness Advocacy
Homelessness Advocacy
In addition to supporting tenants in eviction proceedings, students in the Homelessness Advocacy Project engage in direct service work, policy advocacy, and impact litigation to address the intersections of racism, economic disenfranchisement, and displacement for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Skills gained may include:
- representing clients in fast-paced eviction defense, including client interviewing, drafting a wide array of legal work product (i.e. answers, dispositive motions, discovery, settlement agreements etc.), engaging in oral arguments, negotiating with landlords and opposing counsel
- engaging with unhoused leadership, local coalitions, and political bodies to promote policies that benefit unhoused community members
- engaging in complex federal civil litigation, including conducting discovery, motion practice, and settlement negotiations
- supporting the reproductive rights of unhoused parents by providing guidance and support to reduce risk of separation of the parents from the child at birth as a result of a mandated report to CPS
Example Projects/Cases:
Example 1: A student drafted a declaration on behalf of an unhoused client that was used to support a successful motion for a Temporary Restraining Order that prevented a City from performing an encampment sweep
Example 2: A student reviewed a proposed policy regarding how a city will engage in encampment sweeps and made specific suggestions for amendments that were then incorporated into the policy.
