Cy Pres

The East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) welcomes Cy Pres gifts and partnerships. Cy Pres is a doctrine that permits a court to award unallocated, unclaimed, or undeliverable funds from a class action settlement or judgment to a non-profit organization.

EBCLC provides a number of multimodal holistic legal services that align with most class action areas and makes us eligible to be nominated for Cy Pres funds. These awards allow EBCLC to continue fighting for justice for communities of color and those at the intersection of multiple oppressions.

Our clinics offer a range of services that may fulfill a nexus with your class action. The primary areas in which we work and that would be appropriate for a Cy Pres award include:

Housing Services: Assisting low-income tenants with eviction lawsuit defense and advocating for enforcement of local rent and eviction control ordinances.

Consumer Justice: Assisting people facing unfair or predatory debt collection practices.

Clean Slate Services: Assisting people who have had contact with the criminal justice system to overcome barriers to employment, housing, education, and civic participation.

Community Economic Justice: Assisting low-income workers and entrepreneurs to create environmentally sustainable and worker-owned businesses.

Education Justice and Defense for Youth: Providing support and representation in delinquency, school expulsion, and special education matters.

Immigration: Providing free legal services to low-income immigrants on various immigration issues.

Health and Welfare: Providing critical legal services to people at risk of poor health outcomes due to poverty, unsafe living conditions, homelessness, inadequate health care coverage, and other destabilizing social conditions.
