Financial Hardship? The Court accepts letters claiming financial hardship. You can ask for a reduction in fines, community service, or a payment plan. You can also request to vacate your civil assessment fee in a letter. There are no specific requirements in terms of documenting financial hardship but it is helpful to attach proof.

If you want to set up a payment plan you do not have to write the judge; you can do that online. There is a $35 fee to go on a payment plan.

Alternatively, you can appear in court instead of writing a letter and ask the commissioner to consider your financial circumstances. There are no walk-in appointments so you need to call the clerks or set up an appointment online. However, if your ticket is in collections you have to go to the courthouse in person to get a hearing date. It takes about a week generally to get before the judge. You can, however, still write a letter to the judge and get a written response if your ticket is in collections.
