On behalf of all of us at the East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC), we honor and celebrate the life of Gregory Li. Greg was a deeply passionate, engaged, and committed law student intern who worked with EBCLC's Immigration Clinic during the summer after his first year in law school. We recall fondly the enthusiasm with which Greg showed up to work and served EBCLC's clients. It was readily apparent to all of us - Greg's fellow Immigration unit summer student colleagues, his supervisors, and the EBCLC staff - that he was determined to use his law degree to serve those most in need. When interviewed by EBCLC about all that he achieved during internship, Greg emphasized that his experience had shown him the true meaning of community, saying, “There are people out there that place a degree of value in being human.” https://ebclc.org/in-the-news/student-spotlight-gregory-li/
Said Immigration Clinic Director Theo Cuison, “Though his time with us was short, Greg’s intervention had a great individual impact. That summer of 2019, Greg secured his client’s release from immigration detention – a victory that later resulted in that same client being granted asylum in a contested hearing before the San Francisco Immigration Court held on Election Day 2020. Hearing that Greg passed the day after Inauguration Day hits quite hard for us in the Immigration Unit at EBCLC. It feels like we lost a fellow traveler on the road to immigrant justice moments after we had just arrived to a new, more hopeful presidential administration."
Those who wish to honor Greg are encouraged to contribute to the Gregory Li Memorial Scholarship Fund at UC Hastings School of Law. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated by Greg’s family: law.uchastings.edu/GLMS
We send his family and all who loved him our warmest thoughts at this time.

Social Work Program Student Reflection: Jackie Zavala

Throughout my time with EDJY, I worked with many incredible and kind youth. These youth were tenacious, often standing up to systems that were working against them. Being EDJY advocates, we walk alongside our youth during some of the darkest times of their lives...
