East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) Honors Latinx Heritage Month!

September 14, 2021
In honor of Latinx Heritage Month, we asked our fellow EBCLC community members to share what inspires them to do the critical work they do here at EBCLC.   Ingrid Murillo, Health & Welfare Paralegal "For me, it is important to be doing the work that I'm doing because I think that my experience can inspire others to believe in opportunities that can help us have a better, brighter, and safer future. My heritage inspires me to be brave, resilient, and speak up for what I believe is right, qualities I hope I show every day at work."

Jessica (Jessie) Buendia, Board Member

"It is important to be involved in social justice work as Latinx people because forward movement is at the heart of who we are as people. We have come from many countries to live a better life in the United States. We work and fight hard so that generations after us are able to achieve their dreams. EBCLC plays a critical role in helping Latinx communities fight the important legal and policy battles that will help them access services and improve their communities. I am proud to serve on EBCLC's board and hope to invest all of my energy removing barriers that will help Latinx people's dreams become a reality."   Ramon Becerra Alcantar, Immigration Paralegal  "As an undocumented Mexican living in this country who's had the opportunity to pursue higher education, I feel like it is my duty to help individuals who do not have the same opportunities to pursue higher education and navigate a broken immigration system. My family, friends, and community are who inspire me because immigration is not a Latinx issue but a human rights issue."

Maria Brambila, Consumer Justice Clinic Program Coordinator

"My work at EBCLC has been influenced by my own lived experience as the daughter of immigrant parents. I feel called to do this work because I understand how language barriers and the complexity of our legal system make an already stressful situation even more stressful. As such, I love being part of an organization that always strives to provide education and holistic legal services to our clients."     Juliet Peña, Executive Assistant  "As an immigrant, it is important for me to stay connected to my roots and community. I first came to EBCLC as a client. I was supported through my immigration case with such grace that I knew I wanted to come back. As an EBCLC employee, I've partaken in meaningful work that has taught me so much about the important advocacy and legal battles surrounding issues affecting Latinx and immigrant communities. EBCLC has been a bridge connecting me to folks who deeply care about ensuring we are all able to live thriving lives."

My role as a Social Work Intern in the Housing Services program provided me with an intimate perspective into the housing barriers and challenges faced by individuals and families living in the Bay Area. Having limited knowledge of the topic, EBCLC provided me with the historical and legal knowledge to contextualize my work and the tools and language to work with clients experiencing housing instability..........

2024 IMMIGRATION STUDENT REFLECTION: GARRETH MCCRUDDEN

During my time in clinic, I have worked primarily with unaccompanied children seeking asylum or Special Immigration Juvenile Status (SIJS) in the United States.  To that end, I helped each client determine the type of immigration relief most suitable to their needs and then assisted them in preparing and filing the relevant petitions with California state court or the United States government.........

2024 HEALTH & WELFARE STUDENT REFLECTION: JOCELYN GOMEZ

I constantly found myself wanting to model and emulate the kindness and empathy with which they approached their work and clients. They all had strong, trusting relationships with their clients and often would go above and beyond to make sure their clients’ needs were holistically met whenever they could. They were also incredible teachers! Not only did they help me learn the complex nuances of public benefits law in such a short timeframe, but they also provided multiple opportunities for me to take the lead in cases while providing critical feedback that only helped me grow as an advocate........
