EBCLC's Sharon Djemal Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom as Alameda County Superior Court Judge

December 9, 2020
East Bay Community Law Center is overjoyed to announce that after twenty years of service advocating for low-income renters and then founding, directing, and expanding our Consumer Justice Clinic, program director Sharon Djemal has accepted Governor Gavin Newsom’s Alameda County Superior Court judge appointment. In her two decades at EBCLC, Sharon has dramatically expanded the rights and protections of all California consumers through ground-up policy advocacy, mentored dozens of emerging racial justice advocates, and pioneered the Bay Area’s only “one-stop shop” for direct legal services. She helped to discharge more than $4 million in consumer debt for low-income clients, secured critical bank levy reform with the passage of SB-616, and advanced EBCLC's ability to solve our community members' legal issues related to student loans, credit card debt, debt settlement, predatory lenders, and consumer scams. We hope you will join us in congratulating Sharon Djemal for this momentous achievement. In Sharon, the Alameda County Superior Court has gained a principled leader who will judge with the utmost integrity, fairness, and commitment to honoring the civil rights of low-income individuals. Her legacy will live on at EBCLC through the work of the Consumer Justice Clinic and all efforts focused on advancing economic security in the Bay Area and beyond.

2024 HEALTH & WELFARE STUDENT REFLECTION: JOCELYN GOMEZ

I constantly found myself wanting to model and emulate the kindness and empathy with which they approached their work and clients. They all had strong, trusting relationships with their clients and often would go above and beyond to make sure their clients’ needs were holistically met whenever they could. They were also incredible teachers! Not only did they help me learn the complex nuances of public benefits law in such a short timeframe, but they also provided multiple opportunities for me to take the lead in cases while providing critical feedback that only helped me grow as an advocate........
